The Lycée Français Victor Hugo de Sofia was created in 1966〔http://www.ambafrance-bg.org/Interview-avec-Michel-Senechal〕 and was called "petite école" because like many newly created institutions, it initially welcomed only children in primary school. In 2009, it moved from Lozenetz to its current location, situated in Maxi Complex on Simeonovsko Shossee.〔http://journal.sofia.over-blog.net/article-35862338.html〕
The school is contracted (conventionné) by the AEFE, which is a national public agency of France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that assures the quality of schools teaching the French national curriculum outside France. The school is run by an association of parents (APE) who gives power to board members (Conseil d’administration).
